Living in London: How Much Does it Cost?

People from around the world dream of living in London, but there’s one big factor often holding them back (other than a visa!): price. London is expensive, and there’s no point pretending it’s not. When we decided to open Roam London in one of the city’s coolest neighborhoods, we knew we wanted to create a great experience while making the experience affordable for Roam members around the world.

You may be wondering how the cost of Roam London ($850 per week) compares with other options you might have. To help, we break down some of the costs you’re likely going to have in London. We’ll let you do the math.

Housing is always one of the largest expenses in city living, and London is notorious as one of the most expensive cities in the world. It may seem like the $850 per week expense of Roam London is steep, but let’s break it down further.

In terms of “rent” (as in the money you pay for a place to sleep), your other options in London are an Airbnb or renting a flat. The average Airbnb apartment in London is $190 per night, or $1,330 per week. A similar flat would probably cost you around $500 per week, but that likely wouldn’t include furniture – up to an extra $500, depending on what you have to buy.

There’s also the matter of a deposit. Roam London doesn’t require one. Most Airbnbs will collect anywhere between $150 and $300 for a deposit while you stay, whereas a flat deposit is usually a month’s rent and require a 6 month commitment at least.

For utilities, both Roam and Airbnbs usually include utilities, but the same can’t be said for a flat. Even in the event you find a cheap, furnished sublet, you’ll still be splitting utilities; our guess is that this can cost anywhere up to $100 per month.

Lastly, what happens if you want to cancel your lease? At an Airbnb, you usually pay up front – you’ll lose the money for any nights you don’t stay in the rented apartment. In a flat, it’s tough to say. Usually it’s a portion of your outstanding rent and/or your deposit… but this really depends on the rental agency you use. At Roam, all we ask is for either one week or one month notice – depending on how you’ve arranged your stay with us.

What You Need to Work

Unless you work from your PJs, you probably need somewhere to work. In London, the average coworking desk starts at about $250 per month. You could opt for a single desk in a shared workspace to bring that cost down, or opt for a coffee shop and pay for two $5 coffees per day (hint: that still adds up to $250!) No matter what, you’re looking at an additional expense.

At Roam London, we build a stunning work space for everyone living in the house. Cowork with like-minded people in one of greatest cities, and grab a cuppa of tea or coffee whenever you need one – all included in the price of your stay.

London’s public transit is pretty good, but it comes at a cost. If you need to commute for coworking or meetings – or just to socialize, you can rack up a big tally on your Oyster card quickly. The cheapest option is to opt for a Zones 1 and 2 monthly pass, costing about $155 per month.

Living in Roam London, you won’t need to commute to your coworking space – it’s right in the building. Add on the fact that you’re living in the heart of Sloane Square with every amenity and all the nightlife you could hope for, and you may be shocked how little you need to travel on the Tube. (Ask the Brits commuting at rush hour, and they’d trade any day!)

Maybe you can’t put a price on community, but we all know there’s value in surrounding yourself with passionate, creative, successful people. While you can potentially pay for these communities in coworking spaces, social clubs, and by going on a lot of Tinder dates, Roam brings that community right into the space where you’re living and working. London can be a lonely place sometimes, despite being home to 8.6 million people. Having a community you can jump into will help make London feel like home from day one.

Sure, London isn’t cheap. We wish we could make it so, but instead we decided to give you the best experience possible – at the best price possible. Looking at the numbers, it’s easy to see that you’re getting a lot for what you spend to be a part of our Roam London community.

Make this life a wonderful adventure.
